In 2013 it was recognised that there were no leisure activity for over 55s and retired in Bicknacre, except for a monthly sewing group and church.
Hence Bicknacre Lunch Club was formed offering a forum for friendship over lunch at the local pub. Six people came to that first lunch…
Once word got out, it quickly grew and members requested more opportunity to get together. Their suggestions included a Bridge Club, Afternoon Tea and interesting day trips out.
A committee was formed to accommodate the growth and Bicknacres Friendship Club was launched.
By 2019 the success of the club had reached Chelmsford City Council who organised B.B.C. TV, B.B.C. Radio, I.T.V. TV & representation from Chelmsford City Councils own ‘Friendship in Kind’ initiative, to publish the clubs success and to recommend others follow suit. Bicknacres Friendship Club was heralded as an excellent example of friendship in retired life and, its story spread all over the country and internationally. Even as far as Boston USA.
Along the way, people joined from nearby villages, so to ensure nobody felt the club was restricted to Bicknacre residents and to reach out to all, extending its hand of friendship, it changed its name again to Bicknacres Villages Friendship Club.
The Clubs philosophy is that members feel free to select and enjoy whatever they are interested in and never feel pressurised to do more.
Just friendship, enjoyment and happiness.
We welcome you too.
